The Garden of Happiness

Yuyuan garden

Who is writing has had, from its own point of view, the “privilege” to know, in general the China and in particular Shanghai, in the early ’80s, when visiting them seemed to be on a movie set of a film in the ’50s.

Everything… buildings, streetlights illuminations, only few governmental cars, the clothing of the people, trains and train stations, airports… everything contributed to create a magical atmosphere out of time…

Today, the China and also Shanghai, have made a quantum leap in eliminating the gap created by the isolation from the rest of the world that there is at the Cultural Revolution time; and the great metropolis with theirs spectacular skyscrapers are the symbol of modern China.

Yuyuan Garden is a little oasis of yesteryear, right in the center of Shanghai, near the Bund, the historic road along Yangtze River.

This “green lung” between the skyscrapers was created during the Ming Dynasty, about 400 years ago; it is one of the most important and famous of the city and its two hectares inside the old city are the only example of traditional Chinese garden.

When you are walking between small bridges, weeping willows, streams and ponds in which a lot of goldfish “roam”, you forget to be in the middle of the most populated metropolis of our planet… more than 24 million inhabitants… you lose track of time and it’s easy to spend several hours in the garden.

The strict architectural geometries of this oasis, have been realized about four centuries ago and they give visitors a feeling of relaxation and serenity… perhaps this is the reason why it was called “Yuyuan” the Garden of Happiness!
