The Sagarmatha National Park

Nepal, an Asian country landlocked; it is “embedded” between the two nations with the largest population of our planet, at north the China with over 1 billion and 775 million inhabitants and at south the India with about 1 billion and 276 millions.

Between this two great nations, Nepal, which has a population of “only” 30 million inhabitants, seems a child between two tall and burly adults… obviously its territory, compared to India and China, is a more modest area…

The territory of Nepal, as we said, is small/medium in size, but it has an interesting variety of climates and natural environments. It includes the plains of the great river Ganges and also the impressive mountain range of the Himalayas.

The Himalayas are also known as the “roof of the world” because they include the highest peaks of the earth, as the famous Everest with its 8.850 meters and the less known Kanchenjunga with its 8.589 meters. They are impressive heights and we now we will venture by visiting the Sagarmatha Park.

This wonderful park, inserted in 1979 in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, ranges from a “low” altitude of 2.845 meters with Jorsale, a typical Nepalese village, to 8.850 meters of the spectacular summit of Everest.

Sagarmatha in Nepali language means “the one whose forehead touches the sky”… a perfectly suitable poetic expression for this park… it offers its visitors some hard efforts for climbing but also unique in the world breathtaking landscapes…

In the “low” of the park, below the 3.500 meters, there is the forest area. Flora consists mainly of pine and bamboo, while, at higher altitude units, there are birch, rhododendron, juniper, mosses and lichens. All this vegetation lives up to about 5.800 meters where the perennial snow of the Himalayas begins.

The forest areas are home to a hundred species of birds but also some rare animal species such as yak, snow leopard, brown bear and lesser panda. All these animals have adapted to the lack of oxygen and low temperatures, that are the main habitat characteristics of the high altitudes of the Sagarmatha National Park.
