Discovering Cuba

Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, is an island country in the Caribbean. It comprises the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos. Havana is the capital and largest city.

The island was inhabited by numerous Mesoamerican Indian tribes prior to the landing of explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492, who claimed it for the Kingdom of Spain.

Cuba was a Spanish colony until 1898, after the Spanish–American War. Cuba has officially gained independence in 1902, when it became a U.S. protectorate.

This dream-like island holds numerous historical attractions as well as natural ones. Beautiful beaches and jungle treks are, of course, part of the natural sites. Old towns and ancient ports are historical sites.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Before discovering the Americas, Columbus first landed on Cuba’s northeastern coast near what is now Bariay. The three famous ships, La Pinta, La Niña and the Santa María, were the first ships to navigate the crystal clear waters around the island.

In 1511, the first Spanish settlement was founded. Other towns soon followed including the future capital of San Cristobal de la Habana, which was founded in 1515. The natives were working for the colonizers, building cities, roads and helping with farms and agricultural projects.

After being partially controlled by the British, Cuba started to established trade relations with North America, to the point that—as it is mentioned above—the island became a protectorate of the U.S.

Today Cuba is an island country and it is considered as one of the most beautiful destinations in the Caribbean.

A part from tanning and swimming, when there travellers can do so many other activities such as horse riding, jungle trekking, discovering old towns, etc…
