The village of Grazzano Visconti

Grazzano Visconti

The Golden Scope has already spoken some times about the Italian region named Emilia Romagna, showing historical places like Mattei Rocchetta or natural attractions like the Salina Natural Reserve of Cervia.

In Italy during the mild and sweet spring season,  a lot of people like to have the trips of the weekend, visiting places in the open air in direct contact with nature and also historical places, such as ancient and charming villages that are located throughout the peninsula from north to south.

Today we will take a “trip” in the province of Piacenza and more precisely in the municipality of Vigolzone, where there is a small village of medieval inspiration which has about 180 inhabitants: Grazzano Visconti.

Around the castle, which was built in 1395, it was born the beautiful village of Grazzano Visconti, thanks to Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone. Early last century he takes care of the restoration of the area and thanks to the architect Alfredo Campanini realized, almost ex- novo, next to the castle, this small village of neo-medieval style by converting the old farmhouses.

Crossing the arched entrance of the village is like going through a door of time that takes you into the Middle Ages… gravel paths and ancient dwellings with ornate windows that give you the feeling of being inside a fairy tale…

The castle is a private property not open to visitors, but it’s possible to visit the beautiful park that surrounds it with a guided tour, freely during the weekend and during the week only with a group of at least 20 people.

The park has an area of about 150 mq2, there are a small church, the study of the Duke, the belvedere overlooking the Rio Grazzano, a fun maze and an Italian garden with ancient  trees.

Count Visconti created the village not only to make more pleasant the area around the castle but also to create structures that would allow the work to young and creative artisans of wrought iron and wood.  Today, walking through the streets of the village, there are several wealthy shops of this kind products that characterize the village of Grazzano Visconti.
