Obviously the major Chinese metropolis, such as the capital Beijing and Shanghai, have populations that are numerically impressive but maybe not everyone knows that the less famous Chongqing is a great metropolis of the central/southern China and all its urban agglomeration of autonomous municipality has about 34 million inhabitants.

Large surfaces, skyscrapers that seem to compete to reach the clouds creating at the evening, with their illuminations, phantasmagoric landscapes…. almost science fiction … but in this megalopolis there is another kind of wonder …

Dazu is a district of Chongqing with an area of approximately 1400 km2 and a population of over one million people. Chongqing has had a great development in recent years and so it has attracted many people from outside.

In this district, it’s possible to admire something amazing, the “rock carvings”, a number of religious sculptures of breathtaking beauty!

Certainly the uniqueness of these works is mystical and artistic at the same time, but also the context is surprising… It seems that the entire area has been created on the basis of a policy of sustainability, which is obviously impossible, you should know that first sculptures were started in 650 during the Tang Dynasty.

The sculptures blend perfectly with nature and with the rocks and caves of the hills from which they were obtained. Then there is another special aspect: they represent images of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism as proof of an exceptional harmony between the diversity of the subjects both religious and not.

All this because the sculptures, which from largest to smallest are tens of thousands, were created over many centuries. UNESCO in 1999 included them in the list of World Heritage of Humanity. Only an example, Zhao Zhifeng, a monk, one of many over the centuries, who dedicated 70 years of his life to the wonderful rock carvings in Dazu.
