Jaisalmer, the golden city

India is not only the most populated country in the world after China but it is also a country rich in history, culture and traditions. A lot of fascinating places with beautiful and evocative buildings of other times, such as the one chosen today by The Golden Scope: Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer is a town of about 58,000 inhabitants located in the state of Rajasthan, the largest in India with a population of just over 56 million people and it’s the capital of the homonymous district.

Jaisalmer is an ancient fortified city and it’s known as Fort of Jaisalmer. It’s located on the Trikuta hill, in the middle of the Thar desert that has jealously guarded it over the centuries. It was built in 1156 by the ruler Rajput Rawal Jaisal from which it took its name.

Thanks its strategic position in the desert, it was an important stopping point for caravans and intrepid travelers who traveled the “silk road” one of the main trade routes between east and west.

In fact, during the medieval period, Jaisalmer became an important center of international trade and also thanks to the construction of large stores/warehouses, it helped exchanges between Persia, Arabia, Egypt and China.

Fort of Jaisalmer is one of the oldest and best preserved fortified cities in the world, so, since 2013 it has been listed by UNESCO in the World Heritage List with 5 other forts of the same state federated with the denomination of “Hill Fortresses of Rajasthan”.

Inside the fort walls it’s possible to visit several suggestive sandstone buildings, wanted by rich merchants of the time; and also a group of beautifully decorated temples built between the XII and XV centuries.  An enjoyment for tourists/visitors who immortalise artistic beauty with countless photos!

Jaisalmer, this unique city is named the “golden city” because at sunset the sun “caresses” the fortified sandstone walls, which during the day have a “dark brown” color, but at that time of day their color varies from honey to golden… and this remote corner of great India acquires a magical aura…
