Alternative winter sports

If you are planning on going on holiday somewhere cold and snowy, then you should take a look at this article, which features alternative winter sports!

Don’t get me wrong, skiing is a great winter activity, but there are so many more sports that are considered sort of “unusual” that are much more fun than skiing.

Some of the activities described below are renowned, whereas some others are probably new to you. Either way they are all good fun and should be tried at least once in a lifetime.

LUGE

A luge is a small one- or two-person sled. Steering is done by flexing the sled’s runners with the calf of each leg or exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Lugers can reach speeds of 140 km per hour.

SNOWMOBILING

Snowmobiling is a sport that consists of racing down the slopes with a land vehicle designed for winter travel on snow (the snowmobile).

BIATHLON

The Biathlon is composed by a ski-and-shoot session that begins with an hourlong cross-country ski lesson and ends with supervised target practice at the biathlon shooting range.

CURLING

This is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area, which is segmented into four concentric circles. Curling is also known as “chess on ice”.

SNOWKITING

Snowkiting is an outdoor winter sport where people use kite power to glide on snow or ice. The sport is similar to water-based kiteboarding, but with the footwear used in snowboarding or skiing.
